DEVOTION TO CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP PART 1

DISCIPLESHIP TEACHING SERIES

Devotion to Christian Fellowship (Part 1)

This is the other devotion a disciple must have if he will grow and grow into all that God desires and designs for him to be. While intimacy with God is the first primary devotion of a disciple, no one grows in isolation without the horizontal flow with fellow believers. The early disciples devoted themselves unto fellowship and down through the ages, disciples have been enjoined not to forsake the assembling together of ourselves.

‘And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not      forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but    exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the day approaching.’’(Heb.10:24-25)

1.      What is Christian Fellowship? 1Jn. 1:3-7; Eph. 4:3-6; Heb. 2:11; 1Cor. 1:9; 2Cor. 6:14-16.

Christian fellowship means the flow of life among Christians because they are ‘fellows’ in the same ‘ship.’ It means a group of Christians sharing together the same life and having a common interest or aim. Where there is true Christian fellowship, there is a flow of life, joys, sorrows and even material possession among believers. This is because as Christians, we are members of one body (the Body of Christ), we basically share together in one spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, baptism and one father. We are of the same stock. The saying goes that birds of the same feather flock together. Even though Christian fellowship involves a meeting or gathering together, it means more than that. Fellowship is a relationship in which Christians share the same life, the same goal and interest. It is companionship. It is the relationship of ‘fellows’ in the ‘ship’ of Christ, facing the same direction. Are you actively and practically a fellow in this ‘ship’?

1.    What does it mean to be devoted to fellowship? Eph.4:1-3; 1Cor.3:1-7.

To be devoted to fellowship of believers means to understanding it and be committed to    it    irrespective of denominations, since the body of Christ is one. It means to strongly love the fellowship of God’s people and be committed to it in every way: physically, spiritually, emotionally and materially. It implies doing everything you can, to maintain it and make sure   nothing blocks or breaks our fellowship.

1  2.  What is the basis of our having to fellowship with other Christians? Heb.2:11, Eph.4:3-6, 1Cor.12:12-17; Ps.133:1-3.

Our reasons for fellow-shipping together with other believers are the same as the reasons for our oneness. As children of God, we are members or parts of one body, the Body of Christ. Note the seven things we share together (Eph. 4:3-6). Discuss each of them. What does that teach you about the necessity of fellowship among us?
As discussed earlier on, we share many things in common as Christians. In fact, we are of the same stock; we share the same life. Flowing together in fellowship with other believers will enhance the unity of the Body of Christ. It will also cause the blessings and anointing of God poured on the Head (which is Christ) to reach you.
